Charles III Assumes The Throne In UK, But Who Does In US?
Many Americans and some Brits object when Charles III takes the throne after 7 decades of the reign of Elizabeth II. The traditional ceremonies don't impress these people. The orderly transfer of authority doesn't reassure them. The Brits should be more like Americans, they claim.
But wait, is this really a good idea? Charles was Prince of Wales for decades. Everyone knew he was heir to the throne. His ascent to the throne was so expected as to be almost an anticlimax. Prime ministers changed when they lost the support of Parliament. This too occurred in an orderly manner.
Meanwhile in the US, elections were disputed. But that's not the problem. The problem is that millions know that Biden is a cognitively impaired figurehead, but a figurehead for whom? Biden and Harris are so obviously incompetent that it is no longer possible to believe that they are really in charge. Then who are in charge? We can only guess.
Antiquated pomp and tradition in the UK usher in a new chief of state. But at least it occurs in plain sight. Wish we could say as much.
